India is about to receive its first helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS), which will operate from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh. Using helicopters, the government hopes to improve medical outreach and access to trauma care services to a larger population across the country.
Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia informed Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami about the new integrated airport building at Uttarakhand Airport. Scindia confirmed, saying, "The request for the HEMS from AIIMS Rishikesh is underway, with helicopter assembly and certification progressing, under my oversight." The new Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) would operate under the 'Sanjeevani' initiative, with a 150-kilometer coverage radius.
Why is HEMS a significant step towards the tourists' welfare?
Scindia underlined the importance of the HEMS, saying, "Once operational, helicopters will be stationed at AIIMS Rishikesh, covering a 150-kilometer radius." This would allow the prompt transfer of accident victims and patients from difficult terrain to AIIMS."
Scindia also announced the start of another project to address the state government's desire for air connection from Hindon Air Base to Pithoragarh. He went on to say, "The bidding process for this route has been completed, and the specific route will be awarded after further investigation under UDAN."
Given Uttarakhand's tough topography, these two announcements have the potential to be game changers. Once achieved, the projects would greatly benefit the people of Uttarakhand. Emergency helicopter services will be important in rescuing people during the critical 'golden hour,' just after an accident, when professional medical treatment is required.
This effort will benefit Uttarakhand, a state that welcomes visitors, pilgrims, and adventurers each year while dealing with natural calamities.
