Five people have died in different rain-related accidents in Kolkata and nearby areas after heavy overnight showers left large parts of the city underwater. The deaths were reported from Beniapukur, Kalikapur, Netaji Nagar, Gariahat, and Ekbalpur, localities spread across the central and southern parts of the city.

The downpour caused severe waterlogging, causing traffic to crawl and affecting suburban rail and Metro services. In many low-lying neighbourhoods, water entered houses, damaging property. Several schools declared a holiday to keep children safe from the disruption.

The southern and eastern parts of Kolkata faced the heaviest rainfall. Data from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation showed that Garia Kamdahari received the highest rainfall at 332 mm in just a few hours. Other areas recorded similar levels: Jodhpur Park (285 mm), Kalighat (280 mm), Topsia (275 mm), and Ballygunge (264 mm).

The Meteorological Department said the rains were caused by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. More showers are expected in the coming days.

The timing of the downpour has caused fresh worry, coming just days before Kolkata’s world-famous Durga Puja. Pandal organisers, who have spent months building grand structures, now face the challenge of protecting them from water damage.

Waterlogging has also hit flight operations at the city’s airport. Visuals from the tarmac showed pools of water. Airlines have issued travel advisories for passengers.

Air India said, "Persistent and heavy rain may impact flights to and from Kolkata today. Please check your flight status before leaving for the airport and allow extra time for your journey due to traffic and waterlogging."

IndiGo added in its advisory: "With heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected over Kolkata, we're seeing a chance of delays and slower traffic to and from the airport. While we can't control the skies, we're doing everything possible to keep your journey steady on the ground."

It further advised passengers: "Please check your flight status and consider giving yourself a little cushion of time to reach the airport. We'll keep you posted, and we're always around if you need help."

The disruption is expected to cause trouble for many people travelling into Kolkata from other cities and countries to join their families for Durga Puja.
