Heavy rain continues to hit many parts of North India, bringing floods, landslides, and major damage. Several states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, and nearby regions, are badly affected. Roads are under water, houses have been washed away, and many families have been forced to leave their homes.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that there will be no relief from rain for at least seven more days.
School closures and work-from-home orders
Schools have been closed in many places, such as Jammu and Kashmir, Gurugram, Uttar Pradesh, and Chandigarh. In Gurugram, private and corporate offices have been asked to allow work from home after the city saw a 20-kilometre-long traffic jam caused by heavy rain. In Delhi-NCR, many roads are blocked, while in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand, landslides have stopped traffic on highways.
States hit hard
Punjab has seen its worst flood in 25 years. More than 10 districts are flooded as rain and dam water have overflowed. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the situation could become worse. The state has already recorded 253.7 mm of rain in August, which is 74 percent above normal. So far, 29 people have died, and thousands have been displaced.
In Jammu and Kashmir, more than 50 people have died in the past two weeks, while the Jammu-Srinagar Highway remains shut for the eighth day. In Rajouri and Samba, 19 families had to be shifted after land sinking. Around 500 houses in the Doda district were damaged.
In Uttarakhand, 10 people have died, and 69 are missing after cloudbursts and landslides destroyed homes. A red alert has been issued for the state.
The IMD has warned of more heavy rainfall in Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and western Uttar Pradesh until September 7.
