Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde has raised eyebrows by asserting that the theory of gravity was discussed in Vedic scriptures much earlier than Isaac Newton's theory in 1687. Addressing a convocation function at the Jaipur regional center of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on Wednesday, Bagde emphasized India's rich intellectual and scientific heritage.
In his address, Bagde pointed out India's significance as a hub of learning, quoting ancient centers like Nalanda University, which had scholars visiting from all over the world.
"Newton spoke about gravity much later. It was mentioned in the Vedic texts much earlier in India," he stated in Hindi, as per an official release.
The governor attributed India with the invention of the decimal system, pointing out the nation's contributions to the field of mathematics and science around the globe.
Bagde claimed there have been consistent efforts to wipe out India's ancient wisdom over centuries. He mentioned the destruction of the Nalanda library in the 1190s as a prime example of this, implying huge treasure troves of knowledge were destroyed as a result of such incidents. He also asserted that under British colonialism, efforts were made to suppress India's intellectual legacy.
Urging a return to the traditional knowledge systems of India, Bagde declared the necessity to enhance the intellectual capacity of students by acquainting them with Indian scientific advancements.
"It is necessary to increase the intellectual capacity of the students of the country and connect them with Indian knowledge and science," he remarked.
He also emphasized that there are no "shortcuts" to learning and urged students to read books that would make them more intelligent and help them succeed.
At the event, Bagde conferred degrees and medals on meritorious students, acknowledging their hard work and commitment. The ceremony honored the achievements of students while emphasizing the significance of education based on both modern and traditional knowledge.
