On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet announced that the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana's grant program to support LPG connections for women had received approval from the Center. Under this, 75 lakh LPG connections will be released in the next three years with a total financial implication of Rs 1,650 crore.

According to a report, the Union Cabinet meeting, which was presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is where the decision was made.

The Ujjwala scheme received an additional subsidy from the Cabinet in August. The additional subsidy was set at Rs 200, bringing the total subsidy for PMUY beneficiaries to Rs 400 per cylinder. LPG cylinders now cost Rs 400 for Ujjwala scheme participants, of which Rs 200 is a price reduction and Rs 200 is an existing subsidy.

About PMUY

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), a flagship program of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG), was launched in May 2016. Its goal is to make clean cooking fuel, such as LPG, accessible to rural and underprivileged households that would otherwise use traditional cooking fuels like firewood, coal, cow-dung cakes, etc. The usage of traditional cooking fuels had detrimental impacts on the health of rural women as well as on the environment.

The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in May 2016.
