The deadly blast near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday, which killed at least eight people, has once again raised concerns about the city’s security. The national capital has faced several terror attacks since the mid-1990s, many carried out by Pakistan-based groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, as well as home-grown networks like Indian Mujahideen.

While stronger policing and intelligence improved safety in recent years, the latest blast is a reminder that the threat has not completely disappeared. Here is a look at some of the major terror attacks that have struck Delhi.

1996: Lajpat Nagar market blast

On May 21, 1996, a bomb exploded in the crowded Lajpat Nagar market in South Delhi.
At least 13 people died, and around 38 were injured.
The attack was later linked to militants with ties to Pakistan-based groups. Several accused were convicted years later.

1997: Serial blasts across the city

In October and November 1997, Delhi saw multiple explosions in busy public areas, including near the Red Fort.
At least four people were killed and more than 30 were injured.
Some suspects were linked to Sikh separatist groups, though no single group claimed responsibility.

2001: Parliament attack

On December 13, 2001, five armed terrorists attacked the Indian Parliament.
They killed nine people, including security personnel and staff.
All five attackers were shot dead. Investigations linked the attack to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba, leading to a major standoff between India and Pakistan.

2005: Diwali-eve market blasts

On October 29, 2005, three bombs went off in Sarojini Nagar, Paharganj, and on a bus in Govindpuri, just before Diwali celebrations.
The explosions killed 62 people and injured over 200, making it one of the deadliest attacks in Delhi.
The probe pointed to Lashkar-e-Taiba and the banned group Islamic Inquilab Mahaz.

2008: Serial bombings

On September 13, 2008, at least five bombs went off in Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, and Greater Kailash.
About 30 people were killed, and over 100 were injured.
The Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility.

2011: Delhi high court blast

A bomb placed in a briefcase exploded outside Gate Number 5 of the Delhi High Court on September 7, 2011.
It killed 11 people and injured more than 60.
The suspects were linked to Indian Mujahideen and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami.

This attack was one of the last major terror strikes in Delhi before a long period of relative calm.

2025: Red Fort car explosion

On November 10, 2025, a car exploded near the Red Fort Metro Station in Chandni Chowk.
At least eight people were killed, and many others were injured.
Several nearby vehicles caught fire, and panic spread across the busy area.
The blast came hours after authorities announced the busting of a suspected terror module in nearby Faridabad. Investigations are underway to check if the two events are connected.
