The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has instructed all airlines to ensure that children under the age of 12 are seated with at least one parent or guardian during flights. This directive follows reports of children being separated from their parents during flights.
In response to concerns raised about children traveling alone, the DGCA has mandated that airlines assign seats together for children and their parents or guardians who are on the same booking. This measure aims to enhance the safety and well-being of young passengers.
To enforce this directive, the DGCA has revised its air transport circular regarding the "unbundle of services and fees by scheduled airlines." This revision permits airlines to offer unbundled services, such as zero baggage, preferential seating, and meal charges. However, it emphasizes that such services are optional and not mandatory for passengers.
Additionally, the press note highlights that airlines offer auto seat assignment for passengers who haven't selected a seat during web check-in before departure.
The move comes as India's civil aviation sector experiences rapid growth, with increasing domestic air traffic. By prioritizing the seating arrangements for children, the DGCA aims to ensure a safer and more comfortable travel experience for families across the country.
