Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spoke on a joint phone call with two top leaders of the European Union, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The main purpose of this conversation was to review and take forward the relationship between India and the European Union (EU).

During the call, the leaders welcomed the progress made in several important areas. These included trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, security, sustainability, and supply chain resilience. They also agreed to work harder towards the early completion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which will boost business and economic cooperation between both sides. Another key focus was the IMEEC corridor (India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor), which is expected to strengthen connectivity and trade links.

Von der Leyen also spoke about the war in Ukraine, stressing that it has serious consequences for global security and economic stability. She welcomed India’s ongoing talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She also said that India has an important role to play in persuading Russia to end its aggression and in helping to create a path to peace. According to her, the war is not just a European problem but a global risk that threatens peace and stability across the world.

Prime Minister Modi, on his part, underlined India’s support for peace and stability in Ukraine. He said India will continue to support efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully. The leaders also agreed to hold the next India-EU Summit in early 2026. PM Modi invited both EU leaders to visit India for the meeting. Von der Leyen mentioned that the two sides plan to adopt a new joint strategic agenda at this summit.

PM Modi later shared an update on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote that the discussion was very productive and that both sides reaffirmed their commitment to concluding the FTA quickly and implementing the IMEEC corridor. He also said that India and the EU will remain closely connected to strengthen their partnership, which is based on shared democratic values and a common vision of peace and prosperity worldwide.
