Election results for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana in 2023 are announced. Only a few months before he would run for a third straight term in the general elections of 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form governments in three Hindi-speaking states in western.
The states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in central India, as well as Rajasthan in western India, have seen the BJP seize significant leads. Together, these states account for 65 of the 543 seats in the Lower House, or Lok Sabha, of the Indian Parliament. The Indian National Congress, the main opposition party led by the Nehru-Gandhi family, which is in its fourth generation, finds this loss devastating as the BJP presently owns 63 of the 65 seats.
In X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi stated, "We bow to the Janata Janardan," showing respect for the mandate of the voters in these states.
Declaring: "Some people are even saying that today's hattrick has guaranteed the hattrick in 2024," Modi hinted that the BJP's victory in three states is a sign that it will win a third consecutive term in power in New Delhi.
"The results in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan indicate that the people of India are firmly with politics of good governance and development, which the Bharatiya Janata Party stands for," Modi stated.
"A special thanks to the hardworking Party Karyakartas. Each of them is exemplary! They have worked tirelessly and highlighted our development agenda among the people," Modi continued.
Speaking from the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Modi declared: "Today, the resolution of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-sufficient India) has won, the idea of preference for the deprived has won, the idea of the development of states for the development of the country has won."
Congress party admits defeat
The leader of the main opposition party in India, Congress, Rahul Gandhi, acknowledged loss in three of the four states. On the other hand, the electorate was praised by the fourth generation dynast of India's Nehru-Gandhi dynasty for bringing Congress to power in the southern state of Telangana.
"We humbly accept the mandate of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan - the battle of ideology will continue. I am very thankful to the people of Telangana - we will definitely fulfill the promise of making Prajalu Telangana. Heartfelt thanks to all the workers for their hard work and support," Rahul Gandhi posted on X.
