A strong earthquake hit Delhi-NCR early Monday morning, causing panic among residents. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale, struck at 5:36 AM. The National Centre of Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake's epicentre was in New Delhi, at a depth of 5 km.

Many people felt strong tremors and rushed out of their homes in fear. Some residents shared CCTV footage showing the impact of the earthquake. The tremors lasted only a few seconds but were powerful enough to be noticed in areas like Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad.

No damage or casualties reported so far

Authorities have confirmed that there are no immediate reports of damage or casualties. However, the strong tremors startled many people. Delhi Police have asked people to remain alert and contact emergency services if needed.

The Delhi Police shared an important message on social media, saying, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi! For any emergency help, #Dial112 [sic].” This message was meant to assure people that emergency services are available if required.

Political leaders and citizens react on social media

Several political leaders reacted to the earthquake on social media. BJP leader Tajinder Bagga posted, “Earthquake?” while Congress leader Alka Lamba also shared a similar message.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP leader Atishi urged people to follow safety guidelines and stay safe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the situation, writing on X, “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation [sic].”

Apart from politicians, many Delhi-NCR residents shared their experiences online. One user wrote on X, “Just look at the blast and the wave—it was something else. Still processing it. My home CCTV footage. #earthquake #Delhi [sic].”

Why were tremors so strong this time?

Although the earthquake was of low intensity, the tremors were felt strongly because the epicentre was within Delhi itself, in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan. According to a PTI report, some people also claimed they heard a loud sound as the ground shook.

The earthquake has once again raised concerns about the region's vulnerability to seismic activities. Experts suggest that residents should stay prepared and follow safety guidelines to avoid panic during such incidents. For now, authorities continue to monitor the situation while ensuring that people stay informed and safe.
