With weekly rehearsals, inauguration of the Bharat Mandapam and timings and security allocations determined for a warm welcome to G20 cavalcade expected in New Delhi on Sept 9 and Sept 10, now comes the task of beautification.
The tracks of Delhi, the footpaths and cemented pavements are going to be filled by planted local greens and flowers like Plumeria alba, Calliandra hybrid, Nerium oleander (kaner) Tecoma gaudichaudi, Thevetia neriifolia, Clerodendron inerme and hedge plants. Summer plants like the Petunia hybrid in different colours, cockscombs and sunflower hybrids, Cassia fistula (amaltash), Terminalia arjuna plant, Bamboo Buddha Valley and the bougainvillea varieties Butiana, Lady Mary Baring, Mahara, Mohan, Scarlet Queen, Varigata, Glabra Formosa, Peruviana Odissi, Partha, Subhra,Thimma, Spectabilis L.N Birla and Refulgens would be planted on the side of roads, central median and in lawns by Delhi Public Works Department (Delhi PWD). These floral embellishments will be concentrated on the path of the G20 envoys route.
A senior official shared, “As part of beautification work, the PWD is very keen on enhancing greenery and horticulture beauty along the roads, especially those connected to the airport and Pragati Maidan as well as other VIP routes. As spring season is also here, we are going to install different types of flowers on important routes like Anuvrat Marg, Aurobindo Marg, Outer Ring Road, Ring Road, Mathura Road, DDU Marg and other important roads”
VK Saxena, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor held a meeting to assess the degree of preparedness for the upcoming summit. The meeting concluded that there are other major works pending like construction material disposal, demolition waste, lagging pavement repairs on 61 roads. After, the meeting PWD and the Municipality Corporation also discussed a contingency plan to handle waterlogging issues due to excess rainfall and keep mounted heavy-duty pumps, suction machines and spray jets etc available in case of an unforeseen situation.
The LG office has said that Saxena has laid special thrust on disposal of C&D waste, removal of encroachments, repair of footpaths, and horticultural upgradation/landscaping.
The district monitoring coordinators are also on high alert to deal with issues like walls defacement by political or commercial entities, posters, graffiti with zero tolerance. In case of any violation of pollution norms detected, there will be 30 mobile teams from Delhi Pollution Control Committee continually patrolling the roads.
