The Delhi airport operator, DIAL, announced on Friday that Terminal 2 (T2) will close for four to six months in the next financial year for renovations. These improvements are expected to be finished by September 2025.
Right now, T1 and T2 are used for domestic flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), which is the busiest airport in India. T2, which has been open for about 40 years, will be temporarily shut down for updates. These changes are meant to make the passenger experience better and increase the airport's capacity to handle more travellers in the future.
Impact on passengers and operations
The renovation of Terminal 2 (T2) will begin in the financial year 2025-26 and is expected to finish by mid-2026, according to DIAL. During the renovations, T2 will be closed for about four to six months. However, DIAL says this won't cause much trouble for passengers, as Terminal 1 (T1), which has been upgraded, will handle the extra flights. This will help keep things running smoothly without major delays.
DIAL’s CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, said the renovation of the 40-year-old T2 is very important. He explained that the upgrades will improve how the airport works and make the travel experience better for passengers. As more people are expected to travel through the airport by 2025–26, these changes are needed to meet the growing demand, especially for domestic flights. Currently, the airport handles around 1,300 flights a day.
