The VHP Shobha Yatra witnessed horrific violence with villages ablaze across Mewat, especially Nuh. Nuh has been the centre of religious tensions since time immemorial. Several reports of Islamists committing othering crimes against non-Muslims surface throughout the year.
The recent case of the violence was a neighbourhood of Nuh which pelted stones and attacked Shobha Yatra participants. The root cause of the attack was attributed to the alleged participation of Manu Yadav alias Manu Manesar, a 30-year-old cow vigilante from Bajrang Dal being investigated for alleged involvement in the murder of cow smugglers. So far, in this case, he has testified to no involvement as he was barred from entering the region by Haryana Police altogether.
Owing to the chaos, police have declared discontinuation of the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra by Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The Nalhar Temple was expecting the ‘yatris’ but now the police are checking Aadhar Cards for addresses and only allowing locals to visit the temple. Moreover, the police escorted out all priests that don’t hail from Nuh. Section 144 has been imposed, and borders surrounding the surroundings have been sealed and entry permitted only to natives . However, the 'Jalabhishek' will be allowed to conclude the event.
A news source reported, “permission for the Yatra had been denied by the authorities earlier, keeping in view the G20 Sherpa group meeting which is to be held in the district from September 3-7. On Sunday, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that permission for the Yatra was declined as a precautionary step and appealed to devotees to offer prayers at local temples instead of going to other places in the state.”
On Aug 28, the Haryana Home Minister took to the ‘X’ platform to announce that “Everything is under control. We have deployed a sufficient police force. And people performed ‘Jalasbhishek’ there (Nuh) as per their customs.”
The Nuh administration on Monday allowed 15 seers and leaders of right-wing groups to offer prayers at the Shiv temple in Nalhar area of this district in Haryana.
Congress raised questions about the Nuh violence
Haryana Assembly was in a chaotic conflict after Congress raised questions about the Nuh violence issue. The Haryana Assembly was briefly adjourned on Monday following an uproar as the opposition Congress raised the issue of the violence in Nuh and sought a probe monitored by a high court judge.
Further in the assembly ‘discussions’ after an adjournment of 30 minutes, the house reconvened where Haryana HM Anil Vij replied to Congress’s Hooda and Batra insistence for the speaker to give his ruling on the matter as BJP govt. was fleeing from their demand for an HC judge-monitored probe into the Nuh clashes. Vij said, "We are a democratic and a secular nation where people can practice the religion of their choice. In this context, the VHP had taken out a Brij Mandal Yatra.”
"As per the investigations so far, 500 people have been arrested and the role of people which is coming to the fore, points to the hand of the Congress," he added.
"Police issued a notice to Congress MLA Mamman Khan asking him to join the investigations in the Nuh incident. In the previous session, Khan had made a statement in the Assembly.” Vij stated.
