Tensions had flared up between two factions of the royal family of Udaipur late Monday night, turning what had been a peaceful Rajasthan city into a real clash. A stone-pelting and heated argument clash outside the historic City Palace sent the public into a tizzy. Still, District Collector Arvind Kumar Poswal assured citizens the situation is under control now.

What caused the standoff?

The controversy has reportedly surfaced after the coronation of BJP MLA Vishvaraj Singh Mewar as the new Maharana of Mewar. Recently, the 77th Maharana of Mewar, Vishvaraj Singh, and his supporters were not allowed to enter the City Palace by the family members, including his cousin, Dr. Lakshay Raj Singh Mewar, and uncle Arvind Singh Mewar.

The denial turned into a confrontation at the palace gates. Supporters of Vishvaraj Singh stoned their way and attempted to storm in. Objections from the inside made things even worse.

District Collector Poswal released a statement to the media on Tuesday that clarified things. He confirmed that law and order were restored.

“The law and order situation is well under control. Talks were going on with palace representatives as well as the society representatives. We have agreed on certain issues, while talks are still going on for certain others,” he said.

To manage the dispute, the district administration has taken receivership of the contentious Dhuni Mata Temple site, which lies at the center of the conflict.

“The district administration has moved to take the disputed site of Dhuni Mata Temple into receivership. If either of the two groups wants to register a case, it will be registered,” Poswal added.

The incident displays the emerging differences between the members of the royal family, whose ancestors' legacy is intricately connected with the city's past. The talks are still on, and the administration hopes that the same will bridge the existing differences.
