As Chhattisgarh celebrates 25 years of its formation, the state will witness a major milestone on November 1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the newly constructed Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly in Naya Raipur. The ceremony will be attended by the Governor, Chief Minister, and several Union Ministers.
Chhattisgarh became India’s 26th state on November 1, 2000. Its first Assembly session took place on December 14, 2000. Since the permanent building was not ready back then, the session was held in a temporary tent at Rajkumar College in Raipur.
The new Assembly complex is spread across 52 acres in Sector 19 of Naya Raipur. It has been built at a cost of ₹324 crore. The building combines modern technology with traditional Chhattisgarhi cultural designs.
The complex has three main parts:
- Assembly House
- Assembly Secretariat
- Central Hall
It also includes eco-friendly features such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting. Parking spaces have been made for around 700 vehicles.
At the main entrance, a statue of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been installed. This is a tribute to his role in the creation of Chhattisgarh.
Chhattisgarh currently has 90 MLAs, but the new Assembly has seating space for 120 members, allowing room for future growth if required.
The foundation stone for this building was laid on August 28, 2020, during the Congress government. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi attended that event virtually.
The Department of Culture and Archaeology has started work on a museum inside the complex. It will present the state’s social, political, and economic journey, along with displays of tribal art and cultural heritage.
