Each summer, citizens of tropical areas experience soaring temperatures, and the blistering heat can make life even more challenging for outdoor workers. This summer, traffic police in Avadi City, Chennai, may get some respite from the sweltering heat with special air-conditioned helmets.
Spending a lot of time under the sun makes people feel exhausted, dizzy, and fatigued. These air-conditioned helmets, created by Indian company Jarsh, are likely to cool down traffic police officers by reducing the heat surrounding their heads.
The helmets have a capacity to cool to -15°C and warm to +10°C when required. The head remains two to three times cooler than the body while using such helmets, thus making it easy to work outside.
Avadi City Police Commissioner K. Shankar told The Hindu, “We hope these air-conditioned helmets will provide some relief for our traffic personnel this summer.”
However, only 50 out of the city’s 334 traffic officers have received these helmets so far. The police department is running this as a pilot project, which means they are testing it to see how well it works before expanding it to more officers.
“There is a slight vibration when the air-conditioning is on,” Commissioner Shankar explained. Despite that, the helmets are already making a positive difference, and the department hopes to get more of them soon.
The helmets incorporate a unique technology, ActivCooling™, that keeps users cool in warm weather and warm in cold weather. The company that designed them, Jarsh, says they are designed to enhance comfort and productivity by responding to varying temperatures.
This groundbreaking move is just the start. If the pilot project works, there could be more traffic cops equipped with these air-conditioned helmets in the future, making it simpler for them to do their job even during the most extreme heat of the summer sun.
