The Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) has initiated the enhancement of the tertiary treated water supply system in the city with an estimated budget of Rs 71.58 crore. Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit officially inaugurated the project in the presence of Mayor Kuldeep Kumar and other officials.

Governor Purohit, addressing the audience, emphasized that the project would play a crucial role in conserving drinking water. By treating and supplying approximately 20 MGD of tertiary treated water to the city, the initiative aims to save potable water used for irrigation purposes.

He highlighted the significance of the Smart City Mission's upgrade of all six sewage treatment plants (STPs) with sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology. This enhancement has substantially improved the quality of tertiary treated water, addressing public complaints about foul odors.

Mayor Kuldeep Kumar outlined the initiative's scope, revealing plans to irrigate all parks, green belts, road berms, and roundabouts in the city with treated water. Upon successful completion, the recycled water will also be distributed to industrial units in the Industrial Area.

MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra noted that previously, tertiary treated water was exclusively supplied from STP Diggian. However, after the project's completion, treated water will be sourced from STPs in Raipur Kalan, 3BRD, Maloya, in addition to the existing STP at Diggian.
