A farmer has put his organs up for sale to repay his debt to protest against the Maharashtra government. Satish Idole, who belongs to Adoli village, stood in a crowded market in Washim holding a banner which said, "Buy the organs of farmers."
Social media videos feature Idole posting prices for his organs: ₹60,000 for his kidney, ₹90,000 for his liver, and ₹25,000 for his eyes. He also posted prices for his family's kidneys, demanding ₹40,000 for his wife's and ₹20,000 each for his sons'.
Idole says he had no option. "Before the elections, Devendra Fadnavis had said that the government will waive off farmers' loans. However, they're now asking farmers to pay off loans themselves," he said.
He owes ₹1 lakh to Maharashtra Bank and sees no means of repaying it.
The farmer has sent a letter to Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis via the district collector's office. In it, he has reminded the CM of the government's assurance to waive farm loans.
Hopeless, he wrote that he had no means to return his debt and feared that he would have to end his life.
This protest follows Deputy CM Ajit Pawar's recent announcement that the government would not waive farm loans. This move has left several farmers in debt.
