Tejasvi Surya, the Member of Parliament for Bengaluru South, completed the Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Goa. The Ironman 70.3 triathlon has three parts: swimming for 1.9 kilometers, cycling for 90 kilometers, and running for 21.1 kilometers. Together, these add up to a total distance of 113 kilometers, which is also equal to 70.3 miles.

First parliamentarian to participate in a triathlon

He is the first Indian MP to finish this challenging event. Tejasvi Surya, who is 33 years old, said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 'Fit India' movement inspired him to take on this tough challenge. The 'Fit India' movement encourages people in India to live healthier lives. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Surya for his achievement and shared a message on X, saying, "Great accomplishment! I believe this will motivate many young people to get involved in fitness activities."

Four months of training and dedication

Tejasvi Surya shared that he trained hard for four months to get ready for the triathlon. He highlighted how important physical fitness is for personal growth and discipline, especially for young people in India. He said, “As a young country with big dreams, we should focus on fitness to create a healthier India.” Surya also mentioned that working towards fitness has made him more disciplined and confident, qualities he feels are important for achieving success.

"As a finisher in this daunting challenge, I can attest that fitness goals push your boundaries and make you a better individual. I encourage those considering a fitness journey to take the plunge," he said on X.

This is not the first time Tejasvi Surya has joined an Ironman event. In 2022, he took part in the Ironman 70.3 in Goa as part of a team, where each person did one part of the race. Surya was responsible for completing the 90-kilometre cycling part.

The Ironman 70.3 in Goa is one of India’s most popular events for athletes and fitness fans. This year, people from more than 50 countries joined the race, showing how famous it is worldwide. More than 120 participants were from government jobs in India, and women made up about 12-15% of the athletes. Interestingly, 60% of the competitors were trying the triathlon for the first time, showing that interest in this sport is growing in India.

Tejasvi Surya’s participation and success show the growing interest in fitness and endurance sports in India. Many young people are eager to challenge themselves and work on their health, and his achievement reflects this trend.
