Starting from April 1, 2025, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has implemented a waste management fee, with user charges based on the size of the building. For residential properties with plots up to 600 square feet, a monthly charge of Rs 10 (Rs 120 annually) will be levied on each household for waste collection.
The user charges for waste collection in Bengaluru will vary depending on the size of the property. For residential buildings, the charges are as follows: households with areas up to 600 square feet will pay Rs 10 per month; those with an area between 601 and 1,000 square feet will be charged Rs 50 per month; properties between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet will incur Rs 100 per month.
For buildings ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 square feet, the charge will be Rs 150 per month; those with an area between 3,000 and 4,000 square feet will pay Rs 200 per month; and for homes above 4,000 square feet, the charge will be Rs 400 per month. Commercial buildings will be charged Rs 12 per kg of waste. Also, the BBMP will increase the user charge by 5 percent annually.
The introduction of the garbage tax comes alongside a series of recent price hikes on essential commodities. Starting today, the cost of all varieties of Nandini milk and curd will rise by Rs 4, while electricity charges will increase by Rs 0.36 per unit consumed.
To improve Bengaluru's waste management system, the government has allocated ₹1,400 crore to Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML). Key initiatives include the construction of 27 transfer stations to address black spots across the city.
A material recovery facility with a processing capacity of 1,226 metric tonnes per day (MTPD) will be developed at an investment of ₹104 crore. Additionally, a 50 MTPD Bio-CNG unit and a 300 MTPD plant, in partnership with the Gas Authority of India Limited, will begin operations as part of this major initiative.
