Rajasthan fared in the second position in crimes against women in the NCRB 2021 data with a staggering 40,738 incidents. Amid these gruesome cases, comes a state government initiative to safeguard women’s safety. Ashok Gehlot, CM of Rajasthan decided to ‘ban’ people accused of rape and other sexual assault crimes from government jobs.

Gehlot took to X platform at the beginning of the month to elucidate that a record of such accused shall be maintained at police stations and it will be mentioned on character certificates needed for government jobs. "We have started a campaign against such people and their pictures will be displayed in police stations. They will also be debarred from government jobs," the chief minister said.

Gehlot, with a desire to make ‘Rajasthan Mission 2030’ a success also had a video conference with youngsters aiming to make Rajasthan a leading state in India. Addressing the virtual meet, CM said, "Hamein manchale logon ka ilaaj karna chahiye (we should do something about the 'Romeos')." In the last 15 days, the Rajasthan Police has arrested 300 people, he said while referring to those harassing women and girls on streets, and outside schools and colleges.

"We have started a campaign against such people and their pictures will be displayed in police stations. They will also be debarred from government jobs," CM further exclaimed.

CM Gehlot posted on X in Hindi, “The state government has decided that molestation of girls and women, rape attempts and rape accused and miscreants will be banned from government jobs. For this records of miscreants will also be kept in police stations like history sheeters and this will be mentioned on their character certificate issued by the state government/police. Social boycott of such anti-social elements is necessary."

Gehlot said that the proposal would be sent to the state government for consideration. He said that the ban would be applicable to both government employees and job seekers.

Gehlot's announcement comes in the wake of the recent #MeToo movement in India, which has seen several women come forward to accuse powerful men of harassment and assault.

The ban on sexual assailants from government jobs is a welcome move. It would send a strong message that harassment and assault will not be tolerated in government institutions. It would also make it more difficult for predators to gain access to positions of power.

It is important to note that the ban would not be a complete solution to the problem of harassment and assault in government institutions. However, it would be a significant step in the right direction.

The ban would also need to be accompanied by other measures to create a safe and harassment-free environment for women in government institutions. These measures could include mandatory sexual harassment training for all employees, anonymous reporting mechanisms, and independent investigation bodies.

The ban on sexual assailants from government jobs is a positive step. It is a sign that the government is taking the issue of harassment and assault seriously. It is important to ensure that the ban is implemented effectively and that other measures are taken to create a safe and harassment-free environment for women in government institutions.

DGP ML Lather said back in 2021, "In Rajasthan, the registration of cases is fair, unlike other states where a complainant moves from pillar to post to get a case registered.”. He added that a chargesheet filing duration came down to 54 days as opposed to the earlier times when it was 240 days.
