The Ayodhya Municipal Corporation has decided to ban the sale of meat and liquor along the 14-kilometre stretch of Ram Path — a major road that connects Ayodhya and Faizabad cities. This road is important because the Ram temple is located on it.

The ban will also stop the advertisement of paan, gutkha, bidi, cigarettes, and innerwear along this stretch.

Even though the sale of meat and liquor is already very limited in Ayodhya, this new rule will now also cover the areas of Faizabad city that fall on the Ram Path.

Ayodhya Mayor Girish Pati Tripathi announced this decision on Thursday.

He said, "The executive committee of the Ayodhya Municipal Corporation, comprising the mayor, deputy mayor, and 12 corporators, passed the motion to enforce this ban to maintain the city's true religious spirit."

This committee includes only one Muslim corporator — Sultan Ansari — who belongs to the BJP.

At present, the five-kilometre part of Ram Path that falls within Faizabad city has several shops selling meat and liquor. These will now have to shut down or change their business once the ban is officially implemented.

The municipal corporation is expected to share more details soon about how and when the ban will start.
