Union Home Minister Amit Shah took a major step on Tuesday to enhance the capabilities of Indian investigation agencies by launching the 'Bharatpol' portal. The portal is designed to streamline the process of seeking international assistance and will enable agencies to tackle borderless crimes more effectively and expedite investigations across borders.
Speaking at the launch event at Bharat Mandapam, Shah pointed out the importance of using modern technology and advanced techniques to track down fugitives. He described 'Bharatpol' as a crucial tool in this effort, calling it "a global interface to curb borderless crimes."
One of the portal's key features, Shah pointed out, is its real-time interface. Developed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), it will allow both central and state agencies to directly connect with Interpol, helping to speed up investigations and improve coordination across borders. This, Shah believes, will make the process of tackling international crime faster and more efficient.
Shah said, “We must adopt modern technology and methods to apprehend and bring to justice those fugitives who have fled India after committing crimes. We must stay aware of global challenges and keep updating our internal systems. Bharatpol is an important step in that direction.”
Adding to this he said, “The new portal will enable central and state agencies to share and access information on their cases from the 195 member nations of Interpol. The three new criminal laws introduced by the Modi government last year will ensure that trials against fugitives and absconders are conducted more effectively.”
Shah further added, “I urge the CBI to take the lead in training state agencies on how to use Bharatpol and the three new criminal laws. We need to make these systems a regular part of our work, along with understanding the different types of Interpol notices and their procedures."
The CBI and the National Central Bureau of India handle Interpol-related matters. "This will give our investigation agencies a stronger global presence and help achieve the Modi government's vision of a secure Bharat for everyone," Shah said before the launch.
How will 'Bharatpol' work?
Bharatpol is a new portal launched by the CBI to make it easier and faster for Indian police to work with INTERPOL on criminal cases. The CBI, which is responsible for handling international criminal cooperation in India, currently relies on slow methods like letters and emails to communicate with other agencies.
With crimes like cybercrime, fraud, and human trafficking crossing borders, quicker cooperation is needed. Bharatpol will help by speeding up requests for international help, such as issuing Red Notices (to catch fugitives) and other alerts. This portal will make it easier for police officers to handle complex crimes and security issues more effectively.
