Authorities at Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital said that DNA samples from the Air India plane crash victims have now matched with 87 individuals. Dr Rajnish Patel, the Additional Medical Superintendent, confirmed this during a press briefing on Monday.
“Of the bodies brought to Civil Hospital, DNA matching of 92 (body remains) is completed; of this (the number of) individuals is 87 because there is duplication. 47 bodies have been dispatched from here... "Bodies have been dispatched to Kheda, Ahmedabad, Kota, Mahesana, Bharuch, Vadodara, Aravalli, Anand, Junagarh, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Mahisagar and Bhavnagar,” said Dr Patel.
The plane crash occurred on June 12, when a London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The crash killed 241 people, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
Out of the 242 people on board, 230 were passengers and 12 were crew members. Only one person survived — Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, who is still receiving treatment for his injuries.
Sadly, the crash also killed at least 33 people on the ground. This included local residents and MBBS students staying in the doctor’s hostel where the plane crashed.
Dr Patel assured that all bodies would be handled with full respect and dignity as the identification process continues.
Meanwhile, the funeral of Vijay Rupani will be held in Rajkot later today with full state honours. The Tricolour is being brought to the Civil Hospital mortuary in Ahmedabad to be draped over his mortal remains. Around 2,000 kilograms of flowers will be used to decorate the hearse van carrying the former Chief Minister’s body.
A UK expert who arrived at the crash site told the media, "Maybe we will be able to speak later... We saw what you guys can see... "It's just the same, as you can see from here."
