In a recent courtroom drama, an advocate named Rakesh Kishore tried to throw shoes at BR Gavai. His attempt failed as security personnel intervened and escorted him out of the courtroom. When he was being taken away, he was heard shouting: “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge (We will not tolerate any insult to Sanatan).” He was reportedly unhappy with the CJI's remarks on the restoration of a Lord Vishnu idol.
The 71-year-old advocate is a resident of the Mayur Vihar area and a registered member of the Supreme Court Bar Association,” a senior police officer said. After reaching the courtroom, the police said an investigation was going on. During the initial investigation, it came to the fore that the advocate was unhappy with the CJI’s remarks during a recent hearing of a plea seeking the restoration of a Lord Vishnu idol in the Khajuraho Temple complex in Madhya Pradesh.
Despite the commotion, CJI Gavai remained calm and asked the lawyers to continue with the court proceedings. Officials confirmed that CJI Gavai enjoys Z+ security cover provided by the Delhi Police’s Security Division.
Police said the man was a resident of Mayur Vihar in Delhi and a registered member of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
Initial investigation revealed that he was angry about remarks made by CJI Gavai in a recent case related to the Khajuraho Temple in Madhya Pradesh. The plea had sought the reconstruction of a 7-foot-tall Vishnu idol at the Javari Temple.
During that hearing on September 16, CJI Gavai had dismissed the petition, calling it a “publicity interest litigation.” He remarked that if the petitioner was a true devotee, he should pray and meditate instead. Later, the Chief Justice clarified that he respects all religions and his comments were made in the context that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has authority over the temple’s upkeep. Police are now investigating the matter in coordination with the Supreme Court registrar before deciding on further legal action.
