Amit Shah announces addition of 5 new districts in Ladakh

The five new districts in Ladakh are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed on Monday that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has created 5 new districts in Ladakh for the union territory.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has created five new districts in Ladakh, such as Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang. This move will improve the delivery of public services and help in delivering more government services to people in those far-flung areas. In the past, Ladakh had only two districts, namely Leh and Kargil. This will make a total of seven districts in the Union Territory with this new addition.

Amit Shah shared this news through a post on X saying “In pursuit of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny. The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh.”

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019 split the former state into two Union Territories: one was a Union Territory that has its own legislative assembly, namely Jammu and Kashmir, and the other was a Union Territory without any legislative assembly, namely Ladakh. Since then, central laws have applied to both territories, although law and order are administered by the Union Government. This creation of new districts in Ladakh is a move that has been made just a few months before the direct assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which are set to happen in September since the region’s special status was stripped off in 2019.
