A strong earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook Assam and other parts of Northeast India early this morning. The quake struck at 4:17 am, catching many people off guard while they were asleep.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicentre was located near the Morigaon district. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 50 kilometres, the agency said in a post on X.
The tremors were felt in several parts of central Assam, including Morigaon and nearby areas. Many residents rushed out of their homes in panic, especially as the region was experiencing cold weather and thick fog at the time.
Officials said the epicentre lies along the Kopili fault line, an area known for frequent seismic activity. This fault line has been responsible for several earthquakes in the past.
So far, no reports of loss of life or damage to property have been received. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
Northeast India, including Assam, falls under one of the most earthquake-prone zones in the country, making such tremors a cause for concern, though today’s quake did not lead to immediate harm.
Officials have urged people to stay calm and follow safety guidelines in case of aftershocks.
