In Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, 103-year-old Gurmeet Singh has been granted bail after 16 months in prison — all due to a betrayal by his own sons.

The problem started in 2018 when Gurmeet Singh wanted to donate five acres of his land to a nearby Gurudwara. His sons, Kamaljeet and Harpreet Singh, were angry with this and devised a plan to cheat him.

They convinced Gurmeet that the legal matters pertaining to the land had been resolved. But behind his back, they continued going to court hearings without telling him. Later on, a warrant was issued against Gurmeet, and he was arrested.

After he was arrested, Gurmeet was left to endure in solitude. His sons never went to visit him while he was in prison, and he was totally isolated. He was in prison for more than a year without the help of his family.

Gurmeet's destiny was transformed when some of the members of a local social service organisation encountered him during a prison visit. Sympathetic towards his plight, they took to assisting him in obtaining his release.

Kamaljeet and Harpreet attempted to prevent the process of granting bail several times, enhancing their father's agony. However, after months of legal work, the court at last granted bail to Gurmeet.

The social service group has assured Gurmeet of shelter and care. Describing his ordeal, Gurmeet said, “No parent should endure such treatment from their children.”
