Do you take an antacid every time you suffer from acidity? Wait! Instead of just treating the discomfort, it’s important to understand what’s causing it.
Why does acidity happen
Acidity happens whenstomach acid flows back into the food pipe, leading to burning, indigestion, and bloating. Common triggers include spicy and oily foods, caffeine, alcohol, overeating, lack of physical activity, obesity, smoking, and stress. According to Dr. Nandini Sarwate, Chief Nutritional Advisor at Utopian Drinks, making small lifestyle changes can help manage acidity more effectively. One major mistake people make is lying down immediately after eating, which can cause acid reflux, leading to heartburn, constipation, and even GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
Simple habits like eating lighter meals, staying active, reducing stress, and avoiding late-night snacking can go a long way in keeping acidity under control.
Are antacids the right solution
Antacids can provide quick relief from acidity, but they are only a temporary fix, says consultant dietitian and diabeteseducator Kanikka Malhotra. “Antacids work by neutralizing stomach acid, easing symptoms like heartburn and discomfort. However, they do not treat the root causes of acidity, such as poor diet, stress, or underlying conditions like GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and peptic ulcers,” she explains. Instead of relying solely on antacids, addressing lifestyle and dietary habits is key to long-term relief.
Kanikka Malhotra warns that long-term use of antacids can lead to issues like rebound acidity and nutrient absorption problems. Instead of just hiding the symptoms, she stresses the importance of tackling the real cause of acidity. Simple lifestyle changes, dietary improvements, and, when needed, proper medication to control acid production can offer a more lasting and effective solution.
Ways to prevent acidity
Dr Priti Jain, a gastroenterologist at Apollo SpectraDelhi, suggests eating 2 to 3 hours before bedtime to support better digestion. She also recommends taking a walk after meals, as it helps with mobility and can reduce bloating, gas, and other digestive issues. Simple lifestyle changes like these can go a long way in preventing acidity and improving overall gut health.
