Following a car accident in September 2017, Niles, Michigan resident Jennifer Flewellen experienced an unexpected turn of events. The tragedy put her in a 5-year coma with little possibility of recovery. Fortunately, Flewellen's life took another unforeseen turn on August 25, 2022. All credit to Peggy Means, her mother.

In an incident which is nothing short of a miracle, a ridiculous joke from her mother caused a woman who had fallen into an irreparable 5-year coma to wake up. Merely joking, Means suddenly heard a chuckle that seemed to come from her unconscious daughter. As it had been a while since she had heard from her daughter, the mother was taken aback by the unexpected laugh.

Means recalled the incident by telling People,  “When she woke up, it scared me at first because she was laughing and she had never done that.”

"Every dream came true," the mother continued. Today’s the day I said, ‘That door that was closed, that kept us apart, had just opened. We were back.'”

The recovery was a rare occurrence

Even though Flewellen came out of coma in 2022, she still had a long way to go in her healing. Means described her daughter's progress, saying, “She woke up, but she didn’t completely. She couldn’t speak, but she was nodding. She would still sleep a lot right at first, but then as the months would go by, she would get stronger and be more awake.” Dr. Ralph Wang, Flewellen's doctor, said that her recovery was an uncommon event.

Reactions on social media

The woman's amazing tale was shared on the Pubity Instagram page. The caption said, "Jennifer’s journey includes participating in a football celebration for her youngest son and undergoing additional therapy for continued improvement. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support her recovery efforts.”

Many internet users were drawn to the article. Different responses were elicited by the incredible incident among online users. "Imagine going into a comma in late 2019 and waking up to the current America, lol," one person said. "5 years is a long time. They must have told a lot of jokes until she woke up. I was in a coma for over a month, I was fortunate. Someone would have pulled the plug on me,” said someone else.
