Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday cited an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study and stated that those who previously suffered from serious bout of Covid-19 must not overexert themselves for at least one to two years to reduce the risk of suffering from a heart attack or a cardiac arrest and that this is the major reason for the rising cases of people suffering from heart attacks.

This study comes into light as there have been many cases where a lot of people have died due to heart issues in Gujarat recently. This includes the case where multiple people died while playing garba during Navratri in Gujarat. It was this which concerned Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel to hold meetings with medical experts and cardiologists. Patel had asked the experts to collect data regarding the deaths to find out the causes and remedies.

"The ICMR has conducted a detailed study. As per this study, those who have suffered from severe COVID-19 infection should not overexert themselves. They should stay away from hard workouts, running and strenuous exercises for a short time, say a year or two, so as to avoid heart attacks," he told reporters.

Uttar Pradesh Governor and former Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel expressed concerns over the matter while she was there on a recent visit. Among those who died of heart attacks was one Veer Shah, a Class 12 student from Kheda district, 28-year-old Ravi Panchal from Ahmedabad, and 55-year-old Shankar Rana from Vadodara.

Notably, the state Health and Family Welfare Department before the start of the Navratri festival and garba events published a notification, making it mandatory for garba event organisers to deploy an ambulance and a medical team at the venue to provide immediate aid to participants in case of any emergencies.
