Kerala reports an increase in Covid-19 cases in May. So far, 182 new cases are reported in the state. Health Minister Veena George told people to be careful and stay alert. She said new Omicron sub-variants are spreading in Hong Kong and Singapore.
“Covid cases are being reported in large numbers in Southeast Asian countries, and there is a possibility of an increase in Covid in Kerala as well,” the minister said. She added, “While the severity is not high, self-defence is important.”
Out of the 182 new cases in Kerala this month, Kottayam has the most with 57 cases. Ernakulam has 34 cases, and Thiruvananthapuram has 30. The other cases are in different districts.
Government steps to control Covid spread
The health minister said a special meeting of the State Rapid Response Team (RRT) was held to look at the situation and make plans. They decided to increase Covid-19 testing for people with symptoms. Hospitals must keep enough RTPCR kits and safety gear ready. Masks are now needed in hospitals, and health workers must wear them all the time.
The minister gave advice to the public: “Those with symptoms such as cold, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath must wear masks. It is advisable for the elderly, pregnant women and those with serious illnesses to wear masks in public places and while travelling.”
She also said, “Unnecessary hospital visits should be avoided. It is better to wash hands with soap occasionally. Wherever you are treated, you should follow the protocol and ensure treatment in that hospital. The minister also clarified that it is not right to refer to some private hospitals when it is found that they are Covid-19.”
