Brazilian influencer Ravena Hanniely, whose Instagram following runs into over 266,000, has reportedly decided to go in for hymenoplasty—a surgical procedure to reconstruct the hymen.  The 23-year-old says it is an intensely personal decision that boosts her self-esteem and symbolizes a new beginning in her life. The surgery costs over $19,000 (around Rs 16 lakh).

"This procedure holds special meaning for me," Hanniely shared with Jam Press. "I want to become a virgin again. It's about my self-esteem and deeply personal reasons that have always mattered to me."

What is Hymenoplasty

Hymenoplasty restores the look of the hymen by sewing the torn parts with dissolvable stitches. For Hanniely, this procedure signifies a new beginning in her life and career.

The decision was not made without some controversy. Hanniely revealed that such surgeries are always subjected to criticism. "Unfortunately, not everyone understands or supports intimate choices like these," she said. "We need to move away from judgment and start respecting individual decisions."

Experts speak on the risks and ethics

Medical experts have voiced concerns about the procedure. Dr. Hana Salusollia, CEO of London’s Medisonal Clinic, explained the physical, psychological, and ethical challenges associated with hymenoplasty.

"Although recognized as a cosmetic procedure, it's primarily symbolic and does not restore virginity," Dr. Salusollia told the New York Post. She warned of possible complications like infection, scarring, irregular healing, and dissatisfaction with the results.

Ethical issues, according to Dr. Salusollia, "It raises significant ethical questions. Patients should feel empowered to make informed decisions," she said.

Hanniely's perspective

She remains steadfast in her decision despite all the criticism and medical concerns. She is willing to follow all the post-operative care instructions, including refraining from physical activity and intimacy during the recovery period.

"This is about how a woman feels and what she wants for herself," Hanniely stated, emphasizing the psychological empowerment she associates with the surgery.

For Hanniely, the procedure represents far more than a physical transformation—it's a step toward reclaiming her sense of self.
