The Indian government might have just found a new source of revenue after it earned more than Rs 600 crores till August just by selling scraps which includes years old weeded out files, obsolete instruments, old and damaged office equipment and obsolete vehicles. What is more surprising is that the Indian government has earned so much that it is equivalent to the entire cost of Chandrayaan-3. It is also being estimated that the amount of money earned by selling scraps will cross Rs 1000 crores by October.

The government is also expected to earn this money by holding a special campaign from 2nd October to 31st October with the main objective of removing unnecessary waste and cleaning up the offices. A top government official told News18 that while Rs 371 crore was earned from a similar campaign run last year in October, the target this time in the third edition is hitting almost Rs 400 crore in revenue. The government had earned Rs 62 crore from the first such exercise in October 2021. Since the last campaign ended in November, the government institutionalised the cleanliness drive as a constant exercise and has earned nearly Rs 20 crore each month.

The government has till now cleaned almost 1.01 lakh office spaces in the last campaign and is targeting 1.5 lakh office spaces in this campaign which is expected to be announced by Minister for State for Personnel, Dr Jitendra Singh on the 14th of September in Delhi.

“The success of Special Campaign 2.0 has encouraged the government to plan a bigger campaign this year. All Ministries and departments of Government of India will participate in the campaign. A preparatory phase will be held from September 15 to September 30 and the implementation phase will be from October 2 till October 31. It envisages saturation of Swachhata in all offices of ministries and departments. Special attention shall be paid to field/outstation offices responsible for service delivery or having public interface,” says a government order.
