New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam is all set to receive the leaders of the globe on this fine day with floral pavements, beautified roads, cleared wall graffiti, and a grand welcome with traditional Indian dances and music. While the G20 was dimmed momentarily learning the truancy of Putin and the rather expected absence of the spiteful Chinese President Xi Jinping, the envoys of other notable leaders have arrived which could have significant consequences for India’s future.
The host country, India, has invented the hopeful motto "One Earth, One Family, One Future," yet the Group of 20 leaders is divided and has strategic fault points.
The guest list is vivid and consists of the most powerful including German Chancellor Olaf Schulz, French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, British PM Rishi Sunak, Canadian President Justin Trudeau, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Turkish President Erdogan and Saudi Crown Mohammed bin Salman, South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, IMF Head Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank President Ajay Banga as observers will also join the Summit.
From China, Premier Li Qiang will attend whereas Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov will represent the Russian envoy.
Joe Biden, President of the USA will also be in attendance. The US president will come to India eager to strengthen ties and give assistance to emerging countries, as Washington believes China is floundering. He will discuss efforts to tackle multiple issues, from "combating climate change, to mitigating the economic and social impacts of Russia's war in Ukraine", National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said.
Biden will be accompanied by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who will be visiting India for the fourth time in ten months as Washington pushes to overhaul the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to better serve developing countries.
The White House wants the G20 to stay relevant as the "premier forum of economic cooperation globally", Sullivan added.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is optimistic that the summit would pave the way for more human-centered and inclusive growth.
Refusing to get into the specifics of contentious issues such as the Russia-Ukraine war and climate-related issues, India's top G20 officials told a news conference on the eve of the two-day summit that the declaration was "almost ready" and that they hoped to reach a joint communiqué by consensus.
