As the G20 summit in India approaches its start, United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a record-breaking promise to climate relief, according to the British High Commission in India on Sunday. This is the most significant single funding commitment made by the UK to help the world face climate change.

According to the report, the UK has committed the most money to date to aiding efforts to combat climate change through the Green Climate Fund (GCF). 194 nations created it in the wake of the COP15 Copenhagen Accord.

According to a release by ANI, the British High Commission said, “Uplift makes a significant contribution towards the UK’s pledge to spend 11.6bn Pounds on international climate finance, cementing our global climate leadership. UK continues to show global climate leadership, having cut emissions faster than any other G7 country.”

The most recent contribution will turn out to be the UK’s largest-ever assistance in addressing the problem. In the future, it will open the door for similar contributions from other countries.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak addressed G20 leaders

Before the COP 28 Summit, which is slated to take place this December, UK Prime Minister Sunak issued a call to action to world leaders at the G20 Summit.

According to the report, Sunak said, “The UK is stepping up and delivering on our climate commitments, both by decarbonising our economy and supporting the world’s most vulnerable to deal with the impact of climate change.” He later added, “ This is the kind of leadership that the world rightly expects from G20 countries. And this government will continue to lead by example in making the UK, and the world, more prosperous and secure.”

Between 2021 and 2026, the UK has committed to investing 11.6 billion pounds in international climate finance. This announcement marks a "major contribution towards this commitment and follows the Prime Minister’s announcement at COP27 that the UK would triple our funding for climate adaptation," according to the release.
