If you desire your holiday party to be beyond food, gifts, and happy chit-chatting, incorporate games. Holiday games are an excellent method for getting everyone on a merry dance and keeping people entertained and creating a bit of festive cheer to carry away with them at the end of the day.“You are never too old, or too young, for some whimsy and fun—especially during Christmas.” Assumpta Vitcu, founder and lead planner at AVE Creations says.
Here are Christmas games that fit every age group, from children to adults.
Post-it note game
Grab sticky notes, pen, and paper. Name a famous person or a character on each of those. Attach one on a guest's forehead without giving him/her a look, then let the guests wander and ask yes-or-no questions - such as "Am I alive?" - until they guess. Then, award prizes based on correct guesses.
Charades
It's a classic for any party. Divide into teams, and have participants act out movies, books, or popular phrases without speaking while their team guesses. Add a timer for a more competitive twist.
Musical chairs
Sit in a circle of chairs with one less chair than there are players. When the music starts, everyone walks around the chairs. The minute the music stops, everyone scrambles to find a chair. The person who doesn't get a chair is out. Play until only one person remains.
Telephone
Gather the players in a circle and start with a phrase whispered to one person. When it goes around the circle, the results can be quite hilarious.
Would You Rather
Pose tricky or funny dilemmas to the person next to you: Would you rather have Christmas without snow or without gifts? Keep the conversation rolling around the group.
Two truths and a lie
Share three statements about yourself—two true and one false. The group guesses which one is the lie, creating plenty of laughs and surprises along the way.
20 questions
One person thinks of a person, place, or thing, while others ask up to 20 yes-or-no questions to figure it out.
Never have I ever
It's a circle game where players share things they've never done. If someone else has done it, they hold up a finger. Play until someone has three fingers up. For a lighter tone, set boundaries for appropriate topics, especially with mixed-age groups.
Flip cup
Divide into two teams. Every player flips a plastic cup from the edge of the table until it stands up and then passes it to the next teammate. The first team to complete it wins.
Medusa
Everyone looks down and, on a count of three, looks up at another person. If two players make eye contact, they shout "Medusa" and take a drink.
Most likely
A player asks, "Who's most likely to [funny situation]?" After a countdown, everyone points to the person they think fits the description. The person with the most fingers pointed at them drinks.
