The re-release of Sohum Shah's Tumbbad has shattered all records, becoming the highest-grossing Indian re-release film. It has surpassed Thalapathy Vijay’s Ghilli, Imtiaz Ali’s Laila Majnu, and others to claim the top spot.
Tumbbad initially hit theatres in 2018, but despite positive reviews from critics, it didn’t capture much audience attention at the time. However, as audience preferences have evolved over the years, and with limited offerings in cinemas, the filmmakers saw an ideal opportunity to re-release the movie and gain the recognition it deserved. The pre-release buzz was strong, and it successfully translated into increased footfall.
Tumbbad collected 1.06 crores at the box office on its second Monday, matching closely with the recent earnings of blockbuster films like Stree 2 (1.50 crores) and The Greatest Of All Time (1.15 crores) from the previous day. The film's total net collections have now reached 22.63 crores.
Tumbbad Ahead of Ghilli
For a long time, Thalapathy Vijay's Ghilli held the record as the highest-grossing re-release at the Indian box office, with a gross collection of 26.50 crores. However, Sohum Shah's Tumbbad has now surpassed it, reaching a gross total of 26.70 crores after 11 days. The film had earlier overtaken Sholay 3D (13 crores) and Laila Majnu (11.50 crores) to secure its place in the top 3.
About The film
Under the direction of Rahi Anil Barve and the creative guidance of Anand Gandhi, Tumbbad has captivated viewers with its distinctive fusion of horror and fantasy, combined with breathtaking visual storytelling. Its re-release, brought to audiences by Eros International and Aanand L Rai, has rekindled excitement, highlighting the film’s timeless impact.
What’s especially impressive about Tumbbad’s achievement is that it reached these record-breaking figures without being available on OTT platforms. The exclusive theatrical release has generated a buzz of excitement, reaffirming the magic of experiencing classic films on the big screen, where their artistic and emotional depth can be fully appreciated.
