In a groundbreaking decision, the Bombay High Court recently granted permission for Pakistani artists, such as Mahira Khan and Fawad Khan, to participate in Indian films and web shows.

A few years ago, Pakistani artists, including actors and singers, were actively engaged in Indian cinema, with numerous upcoming projects. However, after the URI Attack in 2016, many of these projects were put on hold as these artists faced bans from various Indian film bodies. Following the Pulwama attack in 2019, the bans were further extended.

Nevertheless, the Bombay High Court appears to be turning a new leaf, emphasizing that patriotism does not necessitate hostility towards individuals from other countries, particularly neighboring ones.

The court expressed, "A person who is good-hearted would welcome any activity in his country that promotes peace, harmony, and tranquility within the country and across the border."

The petition presented to the court had urged the Union government to implement a blanket prohibition on Indian citizens, corporations, firms, and associations engaging professionally with Pakistani artists.

This proposed ban encompassed restrictions on employment, seeking work or performance opportunities, availing services, or engaging in any form of collaboration with Pakistani artists and professionals in the entertainment industry, including actors, singers, musicians, lyricists, and technicians associated with Pakistan.

However, the court dismissed the plea, citing a lack of evidence to substantiate the claim that Pakistani artists pose a security threat. Additionally, the court asserted that prohibiting Pakistani artists would infringe upon their right to freedom of expression.
