Payal Kapadia's first fiction feature film, All We Imagine as Light, continues its magic run on the global platforms. After winning the top prize of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, the film was recently awarded the Best International Feature at the Gotham Awards 2024, a celebration of independent cinema.

This victory holds particular importance as it marks Kapadia's first fiction narrative feature. While accepting her award, the director proudly pointed out the milestone, saying it was her debut film.

Although All We Imagine as Light has gained critical acclaim, it will not be vying for the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars. Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, is India's official entry for the Academy Awards this year. The Gotham Award win might boost Kapadia's chances of getting a Best Director nomination at the Oscars, which would mark her growing influence in global cinema.

The Gotham Awards saw tough competition this year. Films like Anora led the nominations with four nods, while Nickel Boys and I Saw the TV Glow each received three. Kapadia’s film was nominated in two categories, alongside other strong contenders such as His Three Daughters and The Brutalist.

With The Hurt Locker, Moonlight, and Everything Everywhere All at Once being the recent examples, the Gotham Awards have historically been a precursor to the Oscars.

Currently playing in theaters across India, All We Imagine as Light has received immense love from the audience. The film's interesting storyline, coupled with great visuals, has made it a must-watch for cinema enthusiasts across the globe.
