Supermodel Gigi Hadid has reportedly been arrested for possessing marijuana while vacationing in the Cayman Islands. The star was travelling with her friend Leah Nicole McCarthy at the time of her arrest.
On her arrival at Cayman islands on July 10, her luggage was scanned and then sent for a more thorough search. Post the officers finding marijuana and utensils used for consumption of marijuana, Gigi Hadid and her friend was arrested for possession of narcotics and on suspicion of importation of marijuana and importation of utensils used for consumption of marijuana.
Both of them were transported to the Prisoner Detention Center. After being processed, they were released on bail. Both the women pleaded guilty after appearing in court on July 12. They were fined $1,000, and managed to avoid a recorded conviction.
Gigi was traveling with marijuana purchased legally in NYC with a medical license," her rep told E! News. "It has also been legal for medical use in Grand Cayman since 2017. Her record remains clear and she enjoyed the rest of her time on the island."
Gigi Hadid is an American model who in November 2014, made her debut in the Top 50 Models ranking at Models.com. In 2016, she was named International Model of the Year by the British Fashion Council. Over the span of four years, she has made 35 appearances on international Vogue magazine covers. Models.com ranks Hadid as one of the "New Supers". Since 2017, Hadid has been one of the highest paid models in the world.
Various US states had began legalising Marijuana since 1996 with california being the first state to legalise medical use. In 2012, Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalise the recreational use of marijuana. A trend which was followed by various other US states which has led to legalisation in majority of the US states.
According to a 2019 fact sheet by the National Drug Council of the Cayman Islands, "It is illegal to import or export cannabis in any form across the Cayman border. This applies to all countries, whether it is legal there or not." This includes products that are prescribed for medical purposes. But while recreational cannabis use in any form is illegal in the Cayman Islands, cannabis extracts and traces of cannabis can be used for therapeutic and medical purposes when they are prescribed by a licensed doctor there.
