Legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra, lovingly called the “He-Man of Bollywood,” passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025, at the age of 89. A spokesperson for the family confirmed the news, marking the end of a remarkable journey in Indian cinema.
Dharmendra had been receiving treatment at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital for more than ten days earlier this month. His health showed signs of improvement, and he was later brought back to his Juhu home for continued care.
The actor passed away just days before his 90th birthday on December 8.
On November 11, Hema Malini had spoken out against rumours about his health, saying, "What is happening is unforgivable! How can responsible channels spread false news about a person who is responding to treatment and is recovering? This is being extremely disrespectful and irresponsible. Please give due respect to the family and its need for privacy (sic)."
Dharmendra began his acting career in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, directed by Arjun Hingorani. The film featured Balraj Sahni, Kumkum and Sushil in important roles.
Over the next several decades, he starred in more than 300 films, winning hearts with his charm, versatility, and powerful screen presence. He delivered memorable performances in classics like Shola Aur Shabnam, Boy Friend, Anpadh, Bandini and Pooja Ke Phool.
His role in the 1964 film Aaye Milan Ki Bela brought him strong recognition, followed by his appearance in the patriotic drama Haqeeqat. From action and romance to comedy and family dramas, Dharmendra proved his talent across every genre.
Even in his later years, Dharmendra continued working in films, showing that passion has no age limit. His final film, Ikkis, a biographical war drama directed by Sriram Raghavan, will release posthumously. The movie also stars Agastya Nanda, grandson of Dharmendra’s Sholay co-star Amitabh Bachchan.
With his passing, Indian cinema loses one of its most iconic stars, a performer who entertained generations and left behind a treasure of unforgettable films.
