New documentary suggests Abraham Lincoln had relationships with men

The documentary delves into Lincoln's sexuality, particularly through letters he allegedly wrote to his male lovers.

A new documentary, “Lover of Men: The Untold History of Abraham Lincoln,” argues that Abraham Lincoln, often considered America’s greatest president, was gay. The film claims to uncover Lincoln’s romantic relationships with men, drawing on insights from prominent Lincoln scholars and presenting previously unseen photographs and letters. This information was highlighted in promotional video material obtained by various media outlets. An  expert in the film said “Lincoln probably slept in the same bed with more men than he did with women.”

The documentary delves into Lincoln’s sexuality, particularly through letters he allegedly wrote to his male lovers. Shaun Peterson highlights that Lincoln exchanged numerous “love letters” with Joshua Speed, a close friend from his youth. One letter featured in the trailer read “Dear Speed, I shall be very lonesome without you, love Lincoln.”

Shaun Peterson’s Focus on Historical Letters

Scholars and historians have long been intrigued by the question of Abraham Lincoln’s sexuality. Previous notable explorations of this topic include a 1999 feature article in Solon Magazine and Clarence Arthur Tripp’s book titled “The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln,” among other works.

The documentary reportedly includes historical evidence to substantiate its claims and broaden “its lens into the history of human sexual fluidity and focuses on the profound differences between sexual mores of the nineteenth century and those we hold today.”

The film asserts that it fills a significant gap in American history and challenges “the audience to consider why we hold such a limited view of human sexuality. Lover Of Men is not only an exploration of gender roles and sexual identity but also serves as an examination of American intolerance.”

The documentary attracted significant attention upon the release of its trailer. Tesla CEO Elon Musk remarked on X, stating “Everyone already knows he was a gay vampire!” One user stated  “All the evidence adds up to the fact that he had male friends. That does not make one gay.” While another user said “The film ‘Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter’ was more historically accurate than this.”

Describing the film as a “passion project” on Instagram, Peterson has devoted years to its creation. According to him, the documentary seeks to address a notable omission in American history and encourage viewers to reevaluate their perspectives on human sexuality.
