A substantial portion of financially capable individuals in Indian society seek higher education opportunities abroad. Indians represent one of the largest foreign student communities in countries like the USA, Canada, and the UK.
This trend indicates a continuous increase in the number of Indians pursuing education abroad, projected to soon exceed two million. Among Indian students, the majority hail from the states of Telangana/Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Maharashtra. Notably, 12.5% of all Indian students studying abroad come from each of these regions.
The "Beyond Beds and Boundaries: Indian Student Mobility Report, 2023," released at a Global Education Conclave, provides insights into the dynamics of Indian pursuing higher education abroad, with a focus on the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
In 2019, roughly 10.9 lakh Indian pursued education abroad. This figure saw a 7% increase in 2022, reaching around 13.24 lakh students. If the current growth rate of 15% continues, the number of Indian studying overseas is projected to rise to approximately 20 lakh by 2025.
Traditionally, Indian have favored countries like the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. However, other countries have recently emerged as preferred destinations, including Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Ireland, Singapore, Russia, the Philippines, France, and New Zealand.
Top states in India in terms of students going abroad are:
- Punjab: 12.5%
- Andhra Pradesh/Telangana: 12.5%
- Maharashtra: 12.5%
- Gujarat: 8%
- Delhi/NCR: 8%
- Tamil Nadu: 8%
- Karnataka: 6%
- 33% from other states.
The report projects that spending by Indian students on overseas education is expected to surge to an astounding USD 70 billion by 2025.
In 2019, Indian students spent an estimated USD 37 billion on education abroad. This expenditure experienced a 9% surge in 2022, reaching a substantial USD 47 billion. If the sector continues to grow at the current rate of 14%, the projected spending by Indian students on overseas education is expected to skyrocket to an astounding USD 70 billion by 2025.
