A school in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is pioneering education with the introduction of Iris, the state's and possibly the country's first humanoid robot teacher. Developed in collaboration with Makerlabs Edutech, Iris is part of the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) project initiated by NITI Aayog in 2021 to enhance extracurricular activities in schools.
Unveiled last month at KTCT Higher Secondary School, an initiative by the Kaduvayil Thangal Charitable Trust, Iris is generating excitement for its multilingual capabilities and interactive teaching methods. The AI teacher can answer complex questions across various subjects, provide personalized voice assistance, and even move on wheels for added mobility.
Makerlabs Edutech expressed pride in Iris, calling it a groundbreaking innovation that redefines the learning landscape. This development signifies a notable shift in Kerala's education approach, suggesting that Iris has the potential to customize learning experiences, cater to diverse learning styles, and enhance student engagement.
While the long-term impact of Iris education is yet to be fully realized, it offers a glimpse into a future where AI plays a supportive and transformative role in the classroom.
