NCERT Introduces 10 ‘Bagless Days’ for Classes 6-8 to Foster Practical Learning

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has unveiled a transformative initiative designed to enhance the educational experience for students in India: the introduction of “bagless days” for classes 6 to 8. This innovative approach is in line with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aimed at making education more engaging and practical. The concept of bagless days promises to revolutionize how students interact with their learning environment, moving beyond traditional classroom settings to immerse them in real-world experiences.

What Are Bagless Days?

Bagless days refer to specific days in the academic calendar when students are encouraged to step away from their textbooks and school bags to engage in hands-on learning activities. This initiative, created by the Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education, is designed not as an addition to the current curriculum but as an integral part of it.

The primary objective is to offer students a more holistic learning experience by integrating practical skills with theoretical knowledge. Over these ten bagless days, students will have the opportunity to learn from local professionals in various fields such as carpentry, gardening, pottery, and painting.

The Goals of Bagless Days

The Bagless Days program aims to achieve several key goals:

1. Exposure to the Real World: By stepping outside the conventional classroom environment, students gain exposure to real-world applications of their education. This experience helps them understand how their classroom learning translates into practical skills.
2. Enhanced Observational Learning: Bagless days create opportunities for students to practice and observe various skills in action. This hands-on approach enhances their capacity for observation-based learning, which is crucial for developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Themes of the Bagless Days Curriculum

The curriculum for bagless days is organized around three major themes, each designed to broaden students’ horizons and enrich their learning experiences:

1. Technology, Science, and the Environment:
   • Students will engage in activities such as researching plants and birds, testing water and soil, and visiting facilities that focus on biogas and solar energy.
   • The curriculum includes talks on contemporary topics like robotics, cyber security, data science, and artificial intelligence, as well as practical lessons on drone operation and waste management.
2. Contact with Local Industry, Business, and Public Offices:
   • Students will have the chance to visit various local institutions, including banks, post offices, hospitals, dairy farms, panchayat offices, and construction sites. These visits provide insights into the functioning of different sectors and the roles of various professionals.
3. Connection with History, Culture, and the Arts:
   • The program includes activities such as drama, dance, doodling, and puppetry. Students will also visit book fairs and historical landmarks, including the Sanchi Stupa and national monuments like the Statue of Unity, to deepen their understanding of history and culture.

Implementation and Impact

According to the guidelines, students should dedicate at least 10 days or 60 hours of their annual 1,000-hour school schedule to these bagless days. This flexibility allows teachers to integrate these days into the academic calendar in a way that complements the existing curriculum.

A pilot study conducted by the PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education in various states demonstrated a positive impact on students’ motivation to acquire vocational skills. The trial revealed that students showed increased enthusiasm for learning and a better understanding of the practical applications of their education.

The introduction of bagless days represents a significant shift in educational practices. By emphasizing practical learning and real-world experiences, this initiative aligns with the NEP 2020’s vision of a more engaging and relevant education system. As schools across India begin to implement these changes, the potential benefits for students in terms of motivation, skill development, and career exploration are substantial.
