The Karnataka government will introduce sex education and moral education in schools so that students will learn vital life lessons and develop good values. The government made the decision, which was announced by School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa in a written reply to the Legislative Council.
Sex education for classes 8 to 12
The government has made up its minds to include sex education for students in class 8 through class 12. Students will be required to attend two classes a week in which they will be taught about mental and emotional development during adolescence.
Medical professionals will discuss how hormonal fluctuations impact the body and mind, and how to cope with them. "Counselling twice a year by psychologists has been proposed to tackle issues like emotional confusion and anxiety," Mr. Bangarappa said.
Moral education for classes 1 to 10
Moral education will be made mandatory for students from classes 1 to 10 from next academic year. Mr. Bangarappa shared that this move was on the recommendations of an expert committee. "I will discuss this with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and make a formal announcement," he added.
Two moral education classes a week will be given to students where they will be taught about truth, integrity, hard work, sacrifice, patience, self-reliance, concentration, and humility.
Focus on cyber safety
The government is also going to educate the students on cyber hygiene to avoid digital addiction and unsafe online practices. This will ensure the students are safe online and free from issues such as excessive use of the internet.
Mr. Bangarappa pointed out the necessity for the prevention of early sex and teenage pregnancy. He said that the government is making efforts to raise awareness about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 so that children can be protected.
