Nandan Nilekani, the co-founder of Infosys, has made a generous donation of ₹ 315 crores to his alma mater, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. This contribution is a significant milestone in his 50-year association with the institution. Nilekani, who joined IIT Bombay in 1973 to pursue a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, has made this donation to commemorate his long-standing connection with the institute.
The donation aims to support the development of world-class infrastructure, promote research in emerging areas of engineering and technology, and cultivate a thriving ecosystem for deep tech startups at IIT Bombay. It is worth noting that this contribution is one of the largest donations ever made by an alumnus in India.
"IIT-Bombay has been a cornerstone in my life, shaping my formative years and laying the foundation for my journey. As I celebrate 50 years of my association with this esteemed Institution, I am grateful to give forward and contribute to its future," the release quoted Mr. Nilekani as saying.
During a ceremony in Bengaluru, Nandan Nilekani and Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, the Director of IIT Bombay, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to solidify the donation. Professor Chaudhuri expressed his excitement about the significant contribution, stating that it would propel IIT Bombay toward global leadership.
He further mentioned The historic donation of ₹ 315 crores will serve as a catalyst for the rapid growth and development of IIT Bombay, positioning it firmly on the path to becoming a global leader in education and research.
This recent donation adds to Nandan Nilekani's earlier grants of ₹ 85 crores to the institute, bringing his total contribution to an impressive ₹ 400 crore. His continued support and commitment to his alma mater demonstrate his dedication to empowering the institution and nurturing its future endeavors.
