The University of Delhi has announced to launch theĀ Centre for Hindu Studies (CHS) fromĀ 2023-24. Under the new centre, DU will initially introduce a postgraduate and doctoral programme from the next academic year. Topics such as Hindu scriptures, Mahabharat, Ramayan, the history of Hinduism, and teachings of Indian sages will be covered in the new course.

The CHS will be part of the Faculty of Arts, which will facilitate the curriculum design, implementation of the academic programmes and the enrolment of the students for the centre.

This resolution was approved at an Executive Council meeting on June 9. After this decision, DU becomes only the second central university after Banaras Hindu University to offer a course on this subject. This announcement comes after DU made a 17-member committee to consider a separate centre for studying history of Hinduism.

A DU official said that the new course will ensure the diversification of knowledge system in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020. Diplomas, doctoral, certificate courses and other programmes for the course will be introduced later depending upon the operational feasibility of the centre. This year, the University Grants Commission has introduced Hindu Studies as a discipline in the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET).

According to officials, the coursework will most likely include Ramayan, in traditional text written by Maharishi Valmiki and other variations, Mahabharat and women's role in it, ancient Indian literature and geography, the thoughts and teachings of Indian sages, and the meaning and implications of the term "Hindu". The University is also deciding upon minor subjects that the students will have to take in order to make them "employable." The subjects under consideration for this are computer sciences, content writing, management studies, and web designing.

Among other universities, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda offers a similar course for undergraduate students as well while Mumbai University offers a Master's degree under the name Hindu Abhyas Kendra. Gujarat Technical University offers Hindu studies as an optional subject whereas South Gujarat University offers it as a part-time course.
