Five recently founded medical institutions in Uttar Pradesh (UP) will be able to start offering MBBS degrees owing to approval from the Union Health Ministry. These are located in Gonda, Kaushambi, Chandauli, Kheri, and Auraiya. With 1200 MBBS seats added in UP, the number of seats available at the medical institutions in Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur has also been increased from fifty to one hundred. The government of Yogi Adityanath had previously applied to establish 13 additional medical institutions.
Only seven new medical colleges in Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Kanpur Dehat, Kushinagar, Lalitpur, Sultanpur, and Pilibhit were approved at the time, with five of them receiving 100 MBBS seats, while Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur Medical Colleges received 50 seats each.
Five of the six rejected colleges have now received approval for 100 seats, and the number of seatsĀ in Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur has been increased from 50 to 100 each. This means there will be a total of 1,200 new seats added during the 2024-25 academic year.
Following the most recent 600-seat expansion, Uttar Pradesh currently has 11,200 MBBS seats overall, with 6,050 seats held by private colleges and 5,150 seats held by government medical institutions.
Following negotiations between Chief Minister Adityanath and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, the principals of these colleges filed an appeal with the National Medical Commission (NMC), resulting in the recognition of these seven institutions.
In keeping with its "one district, one medical college" policy, the state government plans to open 14 more campuses in the near future. Although some districts already have more than one, there are currently 70 medical colleges in the state.
